Nowadays, Tuscan cigars have reached far beyond the borders of the “Bel Paese”, making a name for themselves all over the globe thanks to the their pungent fragrance and defined taste. However, less known is the fact that they have almost been created by mistake! In the distant August 15th of the year 1815, Florence was hit by a violent and sudden thunderstorm, which did not allow sufficient time to shelter all the tobacco of the Grand Duchy of Tuscany, Ferdinando III. After the initial heartbreak, the decision was to put the tobacco to dry and use it for the production of cigars to be sold at low cost. Surprisingly, these new cigars were very well received by the populace and they enjoyed immediate success: an “accident” that changed forever the future of tobacco.
Therefore, the tradition of tobacco has a long history and in Tuscany it is possible to jump into the past any time one decides to drive around one of the scenic routes of the area. In Valdera, for example, there are many tobacco factories that even today can be seen along the travelled roads. They are mostly abandoned buildings, where the tobacco cultivations have been replaced by beautiful fields of sunflowers or poplar groves, but that still hold the ancient charm of these history-rich buildings.
Many tobacco factories are still in use, but with a new purpose! In fact, in Castelfalfi, the ancient building that dried tobacco and where the people of the village worked, has become a charming hotel, whose past is contained in the name itself: “La Tabaccaia”. The building has been restored by paying great attention to the use of traditional materials, colours and style of the region. Each one of the 31 enchanting rooms has a Tuscan design with restored beams and ceilings covered in terracotta that date back to the construction of the original building.
A hotel with an unmistakable style that did not abandon its true essence, which still today reminds of the history of a place where love for the land and its cultivations have always allowed the inhabitants to return home with a smile.
